As a citizen of the United States of America, you have the right to contact your elected representatives about issues that are important to you. You do not forfeit this right when you accept a federal job. Elected representatives care what their constituents think. Most never call or write. Those that do can help set the priorities and agenda of their representatives.
You can obtain contact information for your Congressional representatives here:
If you do contact your Congressional representative, be sure to do so on your own time and your own dime. Never contact your Congressional representative while on the clock as an agency employee, and never use agency equipment (email, phone, fax, etc). Also, while you may identify your employment, you should make it clear you are speaking to them as private citizen.
In addition, you can offer your support and your personal involvement to the organization that is working so hard on your behalf. If you are not a member, please consider joining the cause and helping make a difference - for yourself, for your proud agency, and for the American taxpayer. Our union's work is only possible because of the support of our dues-paying members. If you are a member, contact a Local or Regional union official to find out how you can get involved in our work. All Council work is performed by employees like you, who have decided to step up and serve. Many come to us with their concerns, but few step up to offer their help in addressing these many concerns. If you have an interest in serving, we can put you to work!
To paraphrase John F. Kennedy: Ask not what your union can do for you. Ask what you can do for you union. You see, the union is us. If we do not join and work to make it strong, then the answer to the question of what the union can do for us is, "not much." We get what we pay for, with our dues and by the sweat of our brows. There is no free lunch. To quote Frederick Douglas:
You may join us, and be part of the solution. Or, you may sit back, and take whatever comes. The choice is yours.
